We were delighted recently to welcome a group of ostomists to The Blue Piano in Birmingham for a social evening full of fun, laughter and prosecco!
The event gathered together a small group of people living with an ostomy (and some family and friends) to socialise and share their experiences which everyone who attended found interesting and relatable.
At our event we also brought along two guest speakers, Jo Phillips (Got Stoma? Vlogostomy) and Lauren Henderson (Purple Wings Charity).
If you follow Jo’s vlog you’ll know she talks candidly about her life with an ostomy, so we were delighted that she came and spoke openly to the group about body image. Jo was so engaging and interesting to listen to that her 30-minute talk took over an hour to finish!
After a delicious buffet of homemade Asian cuisine, Lauren spoke to our guests about the experiences that drove her to set up Purple Wings and spoke of the amazing work the charity does.
Throughout the evening we had a beautician on hand pampering our guests with manicures and nail extensions. Andrea was busy all evening as most of the group took advantage of her services.
It was great to have a wide-ranging group of people talking openly about living with a stoma, sharing their stories and offering advice to each other. There were even new friends swapping phone numbers and agreeing to stay in touch at the end of the evening which was really pleasing.
“To listen to young people opening up in the way that they did about their very recent operations and emotional feelings was quite a revelation, and clearly very therapeutic to them as well. I think the success of the evening could be judged by the fact that you had to kick us out at the end so to speak” – Michael Jameson (Chairman of Birmingham IA)
We were delighted with the successful event and will be looking to host more in the near future. To find out more information about where and when our next events will be please click here.
