Get outdoors and enjoy sporting activities with a stoma

The arrival of warmer weather and longer days in the summer prompts us to spend more time outside. Maintaining an active lifestyle with a stoma during the warmer summer months is very achievable. With careful consideration and preparation, you can partake in various outdoor activities such as walking, hiking, cycling, water activities, and any other sports you enjoy or wish to try. Here are some suggestions to help you stay active and make the most of outdoor pursuits while living with a stoma.

  • Concentrate on activities that align with your interests, abilities, and comfort level whether that’s water activities, running, hiking, cycling or some of the many other outdoor activities. Keep in mind your activity level and the potential impact of heat and sweat. The adhesive part of your pouch that adheres to your skin may react differently from what you’re used to, potentially affecting the wear time or the pouch’s security. Using a barrier film like Protect Plus can help with adhesion, while our Contour flange extenders help provide security against edge lifting of the adhesive baseplate.
  • Empty or change your pouch before engaging in activities to prevent it from becoming too full and causing discomfort. This will also reduce the risk of leakage during exercise. Popping a solidifying agent like Perform into your pouch will help thicken output and minimise movement inside your pouch.
  • When venturing outdoors, it’s a good idea to plan ahead and ensure you have an ample supply of pouches, seals, and any other accessories you use. Consider packing extras in case of emergencies or unexpected circumstances. If you’re participating in water activities, it may be beneficial to carry a small waterproof bag or pouch to keep your supplies dry.
  • Ensure that you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
