What To Wear? Finding The Right Clothing with a Stoma

What To Wear? Finding The Right Clothing with a Stoma

In the days leading up to my stoma surgery, I worried about what I would be able to wear afterward. I was convinced the outline of my stoma bag would be seen in everything I wore, which would massively limit my clothing choices. But the reality of that was so different, and I wear tight-fitting clothes more now than ever.

When I was suffering from ulcerative colitis, my wardrobe was restricted to comfy clothes only because of the pain. So, fast forward to after I had recovered from my operation and the pain was gone, I had so much more freedom. If you are in a similar position where you don’t know what to do or what to wear, hopefully, this blog will help!

Prioritise Comfort
First things first, comfort is key. You need to wear something that makes you feel and look good.

Fabric Matters
One thing I have noticed is that the quality of the clothes makes a massive difference. Opting for thicker, higher-quality fabrics makes your stoma bag less noticeable.

Different Fits
I love a floaty dress, especially in the summer, as you won’t notice your bag, especially as it fills up. But I also love a tight-fitting dress if the occasion requires it! I recently got the most gorgeous dress from Oh Polly which had a built-in bodysuit that provided great support too!

Supportive Clothing
When it comes to the gym, I like to opt for a high-waisted legging/short set, as I feel it offers a really supportive fit for both cardio and weight training.

Embrace Your Style
Don’t shy away from anything just because you have a stoma bag. Wear that outfit! When have you ever walked down the street and thought, ‘I can see that person definitely has a stoma’? The answer is probably never! The reality is no one will notice, so don’t let it stop you from dressing how you want.

So, to finish, there may be some extra things you need to consider when going shopping post stoma surgery, but it definitely won’t stop you from looking amazing and dressing how you want. When you feel good, you look good!
