Travelling with a Stoma: A Guide to a Smooth Journey

Travelling with a Stoma: A Guide to a Smooth Journey

Travelling can be an exciting adventure, but for individuals like myself, it may come with some unique challenges. However, with the right preparation and knowledge, you can embark on your travels with confidence and ease. In this blog post, we’ll explore important aspects of travelling with a stoma, including packing supplies, navigating airport security, choosing suitable swimwear, and coping with hot weather. If you’re seeking in-depth travel advice and information, I highly recommend exploring Pelican Healthcare’s website. It’s an exceptional resource that offers a wealth of information contributed by diverse bloggers. Whether you’re an ostomate looking for proven methods or simply seeking comprehensive travel-related content.

Packing Supplies:

When preparing for a trip, packing the right supplies for your stoma is crucial. Ensure you have an ample supply of ostomy bags, adhesive products, and any necessary accessories. I would advise to carry extra supplies in your carry-on luggage to avoid any mishaps in case of lost or delayed checked baggage. I’m such an over-packer when it comes to travelling. I change my bag daily (sometimes every few days if I’m lazy), so for a three day weekend where I’m in and out of the pool, I would pack around 10 bags and supplies to put my mind at ease.

Navigating Airport Security:

Airport security procedures can be a concern for individuals with a stoma. To ensure a smooth experience, I tend to inform the security personnel discreetly about my medical condition. They are trained to handle such situations with sensitivity and respect your privacy. It may be helpful to carry a card explaining your condition to facilitate communication. Alternatively, I sometimes choose to wear a sunflower lanyard, which serves as a discreet way to communicate that you have a disability, including a stoma.

Swimwear for Stoma Users:

One of the joys of travelling is enjoying time by the water and swimming. For us ostomates, selecting suitable swimwear can be extremely frustrating. Look for swimwear options with high-waisted bottoms or specialized swimwear designed for individuals with stomas. I tend to shop for textured material in a tanga style. I find that the high leg and mid rise gives me enough support and security. My best advice is embrace your stoma confidently and proudly. Wear a swimsuit that makes you feel comfortable and fabulous, and indulge in the joy of the moment without concerning yourself with the opinions of others (this is sometimes easier said than done). Your happiness and self-assurance are what truly matters.

Dealing with Hot Weather:

Travelling to destinations with hot climates requires special consideration. Heat and humidity can impact your stoma’s performance, leading to potential challenges. Stay hydrated to prevent dehydration, as it can affect the consistency of your output. Consider using stoma bag covers or wraps that are breathable and help manage moisture. Maintaining proper hydration is essential, especially in hot weather. Stay proactive and prioritize your hydration, especially when you’re traveling. It’s essential to keep your body well-hydrated to maintain your overall well-being. I tend to drink plenty of water and have hydrating solutions like Dioralyte on hand. These measures help me stay refreshed and ensure that I’m taking care of my body’s hydration needs.

Travelling with a stoma doesn’t have to be daunting. By planning ahead and equipping yourself with the right information, you can enjoy your travels with confidence. Always remember that having a stoma doesn’t limit your capabilities or experiences. With a little extra care and precaution, you can confidently engage in just about anything.

Bon voyage!
