Winter skin with a stoma

Winter skin with a stoma

Winter is coming into full swing. Unfortunately, due to my medications, eczema, and psoriasis, my skin is not my friend at the moment.

Skin Care

My skin currently hates me. I’m tackling it daily with the green Aveeno moisturiser. It’s so dry that it’s splitting if I scratch too hard. This is partly my fault because I’ve been going heavy on the talcum powder and Epsom salts.

Medications, chronic illness, and winter can cause dry skin. It’s about finding what works for you and having a good skincare regime that you keep on top of.

Peristomal Skin

Winter can also cause changes to your peristomal skin. Constant stripping with bag changes can cause skin stripping. There’s also that little ring on the outside edge where your baseplate sits. That little area can occasionally get itchy and cause some discomfort.

For me, using the Vitamin E range that Pelican Healthcare manufactures has helped my peristomal skin massively, so that’s one less worry for me during the winter months.

The Vitamin E both protects and, I feel, moisturises my stoma site. I also use the adhesive remover and barrier spray, which gives my skin that extra layer of protection.

As always
